Bachelor of Applied Business in Emergency Services

Learn the skills and earn the credentials to carry you higher in your emergency services career

Develop integrated management and leadership skills through 19 required modules, 6 electives and 2 practicums.

As an added benefit, this program is part-time and online. You can continue to work full-time.

Your background can be in:

QETC 140 Fire Officer Communications and Background Knowledge

Course ID: #QETC 140

Course Description: This textbook based course supplies you with the background knowledge necessary to assume the role of company officer. This includes a broad range of firefighting and managerial information that will allow you to effectively supervise and manage the firefighters in your company and contribute to the smooth operation of your fire department in routine and emergency situations. This course accommodates a broad range of written and verbal interpersonal communication skills. When you complete this course, you'll have a working knowledge of the various written documents used in the fire service, communication concepts, language perceptions, listening skills, personal image, presentation types and delivery of presentations. You will be able to operate in an information management system as well as in all levels of the incident system used by your department.

QETC 141 Introduction to Basic Supervisor Functions

Course ID: #QETC 141

Course Description: This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to carry out basic supervisory and administrative functions at the unit level of the fire department. Interpersonal and oral communications are stressed as company officers supervise routine activities, train new members, recommend action for member-related problems, and apply human relations policies and procedures to administrative situations. Students will also prepare budget requests, change a departmental policy, execute routine administrative functions, and analyze and understand the purpose of each management component of the organization.

 QETC 142 Safety Regulations and Basic Investigation

Course ID: #QETC 142

Course Description: The Company Officer is often the liaison between the fire department and the general public. This textbook-based course gives the student the skills to initiate action on a community need, initiate action to a citizen's concern and to respond to a public enquiry. The safety and well-being of members is also the responsibility of the company officer. To that end, students learn to apply safety regulations to all department activities, to conduct an initial accident investigation, and to implement a members wellness and fitness program. They acquire the knowledge and skill to secure an incident scene, thus providing for the safety of members and the general public and conduct a fire investigation and draw up a pre-incident plan for an occupancy.

Course Description: In this textbook-based course, learn to develop an initial action plan at an incident. This knowledge is then synthesized with the skills needed to implement the action plan, communicate effectively in an emergency situation, complete an incident response report and conduct a post-incident analysis of the situation.

QETC 244 Legal Aspects and Evaluating Performance

Course Description: Students learn the legal and legislative responsibilities of a Level II Fire Officer and of the fire department in this textbook based course. At this level students have increased responsibilities related to the development of their members. Students learn to maximize member performance, evaluate job performance, and create a member’s professional development plan. Students also learn to analyze a member’s accident, injury or health exposure with the aim of decreasing the same. Finally students explain the benefits to the organization of cooperating with allied organizations.

QETC 245 Administrative Functions and Fire Investigation

Course ID: #QETC 245

Course Description: This text-book based course covers more advanced administrative requirements of the Level II Fire Officer including preparing a project or divisional budget, writing news releases, preparing written reports, identifying service demands for various planning areas within the service area of the organization, and developing policy or procedural changes. As part of budget preparation you will also learn the process of purchasing. Finally, you will learn how to determine the preliminary cause of fire to determine if arson is involved.

QETC 246 Multi-unit Incident Management

Course ID: #QETC 246

Course Description: In this textbook-based course, students learn how to supervise multi-unit emergency operations, obtain and deploy resources while working within the incident management system. Realistic simulations are created to allow the student to serve in command staff and unit supervision positions. Finally, students develop and conduct a post-incident analysis for a multi-unit incident and produce a written report of their findings.

NFPA 1021 Level III & IV Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications
NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level III & Level IV  courses are once again available in Vermilion through ETC in partnership with the Ontario Fire College.
 
Both levels include pre-course work that starts 5 weeks before the on-site classes at ETC, as well as a final project submitted after the face-to-face classes.
  • Level III pre-course work starts Feb 14, 2022. On-site runs March 21 -25, 2022.
  • Level IV pre-course work starts Sept 26, 2022. On-site runs Oct 31 - Nov 4, 2022.

NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire and Emergency Services Instructor Professional Qualifications
 Prepare yourself for the challenges of teaching fire and emergency services courses.
 
The NFPA 1041 standard is designed for firefighters who want to become professional instructors.
 
Theory and techniques in these courses are also useful to anyone who does safety training or develops fire safety education materials.
 
Level one training builds your knowledge about learning environment, student behaviours, testing and assessment, lesson planning and lesson delivery.
 
The advanced course, Level 2, expands into different teaching methods, analyzing student test results, managing resources, record keeping and scheduling.
 
We also offer a 3-day enhanced presentation skills course that supplements both instructor and safety educator training.
 
Fire and Emergency Services Instructor 8th edition, published by IFSTA, is the textbook. Its cost isn't included in course fees.

It’s more than seeing people safely mustered when a fire alarm goes off. As a fire marshal you are responsible for ensuring fire safety in an area, building or site.
