Take advantage of a specialized elementary education route: the University of Alberta’s Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP).
- Start in Lakeland’s university transfer program taking 60 credits (2 years). Courses are mainly in-person.
- Stay at Lakeland for the next 2 years to complete your degree through ATEP.
ATEP is a degree completion program after completing 60 credits (2 years) of a BEd elementary stream.
- The program is open to all eligible students (see admission requirements below).
- One of the program’s goals is to train more First Nations, Métis and Inuit teachers.
- Non-Indigenous graduates will gain a greater understanding of Indigenous cultures and a clearer perspective on teaching Indigenous children.
Our second cohort is scheduled to start Fall 2022.
- The 10 required 1st year courses are offered over a 10-month period rather than the traditional Sept - April.
- You aren't automatically in year 3 of ATEP. You must apply to transfer to ATEP after completing your 60 credits (2 years) at Lakeland, and be accepted by the U of A.
Admission requirements |
| This is a BEd degree, so the academic requirements are exactly the same. You need English 30 and a grade 12 math (click on the requirements link above for details). Admissions requirements to ATEP include the 60 course credits and a satisfactory academic standing. |
ATEP cohort courses |
| For year 1 and 2, you’ll take a specific block of courses required for the BEd elementary/ATEP route. Note: These will be available again starting in Fall 2022. You won’t need to meet with our academic advisor, as the courses will have been selected for you. As well, the courses will run for 10-months, September through June. Watch for details about the 10 courses in your first year. |
Years 3 & 4 |
| You will still need to apply to transfer into the ATEP program for year 3. If your plans change, your 2 years of courses would provide you with credits to transfer to the general University of Alberta’s BEd (elementary) degree program. |

| If you're interested in the ATEP route and already have some university course credits, you could still be part of the program.

If you are a current Lakeland UT student, make an appointment with the academic advisor to discuss your options. In both cases you'd be in the U of A elementary education route, and would apply to transfer into ATEP for year 3. |
- You must also meet all the admission requirements of the degree-granting institution. This may include appropriate high school courses and averages.
- Admission is competitive. There may be quotas for number of students admitted to the degree program at the receiving institution.
- Some receiving institutions specify a minimum grade for transfer credit.
- If you change a program or receiving institution, be aware that there may not be room in the new program.
