Since there are a limited number of seats at the U of A and USask admission to dentistry is highly competitive. This means you must do well in 3 areas:
- your GPA
- the required Dental Aptitude Test (DAT)
- the interview
To provide as many options as possible, you should pursue a science program that includes all the dentistry requirements but also other potential careers.
DAT
No matter what dental school you want to transfer to you must take the Dental Aptitude Test (DAT).
You register for the exam. Registration typically closes in mid-September and mid-January for exams held the next November and February.
The Canadian Dental Association recommends buying a DAT prep kit. In addition you can buy a soap 6-pack (carving material) and DAT pre-manual. Cost for all 3 is about $150.
You’ll need to meet the minimum scores in reading comprehension, perceptual ability and manual dexterity. Usually accepted students score much higher than the minimum. USask lists the last 3 years of minimum DAT scores of accepted applicants.
DAT scores are valid for 3 years.
If you take DAT more than once, the single best overall score will be used.
MMI
Both U of A and USask also require personal interviews. Both also use the multiple mini interview (MMI) format.
