Winning a TransCanada Trades Scholarship has not only helped Cayley Harvey pay for her Lakeland education, it's also increased her profile throughout North America.
Harvey, a parts technician apprentice, was one of about 450 post-secondary students to win a TransCanada award in 2018. She applied for the $1,000 award in March 2018 after her dad Paul saw a campaign for the award on social media.
Now Harvey is one of the faces of the 2019 TransCanada scholarship campaign.
“When you go to their website I'm the first person you see,” says Harvey, who is currently at the Vermilion campus completing her second period of parts technician technical training.
After learning that she would receive a scholarship, she was asked to submit a photo to TransCanada. “First they used a quote from my application and then they asked if I'd like to participate in a video,” says Harvey.
In November, a four-person video crew travelled to eastern Alberta to interview and shoot footage of Harvey at the Vermilion campus and in her hometown of Wainwright where she works. She is a parts technician at Paul's Trailers & Truck Outfitting, a business owned by her dad.
“The crew was here Nov. 19 and 20. Both days were full-day shoots. You had to do a
lot of things over and over again - I'm sure I was asked the same questions about
10 times each,” says Harvey, who enjoyed the experience.
The TransCanada campaign launched in January and since then, she's received many positive comments about the video.
Harvey was happy to help TransCanada promote its scholarship program as she knows how important awards programs are to students. In addition to the TransCanada scholarship, Harvey has received a Registered Apprenticeship Program scholarship, Wainwright Elks award and Alexander Rutherford scholarship.
“Receiving these scholarships is a big weight off of my shoulders. I don't have to worry about paying for college as much as I thought I was going to have to,” she says.
