There are many reasons a high school student might choose to take a dual credit program, but for two current Lakeland students, the result was the same - the program ignited a passion for welding.

For Tiegan Larouche, a third-year welding apprentice and graduate of Dr. Folkins Community School in Chauvin, Alta., the dual credit welding option in high school was an opportunity to learn a new skill that might be helpful at his family's farm.

“I ended up enjoying it so much, I decided to pursue it as a career,” he explains. “I chose Lakeland for welding because I'd heard from a number of people that it was the best school in Alberta. I'm really enjoying it, I love it.”

In the dual credit program, students are offered the opportunity to earn college-level credits before they graduate high school, giving them a head start on their college education. Lakeland works with 15 school divisions, offering dual credit opportunities in welding, carpentry, automotive services, heavy oil and gas, and more.

For Tyler Manchen, currently in his second year in the welding program, the dual credit option in high school was a convenient way to fill a gap in his schedule in Grade 11 at Dewberry School. He took a few week-long career and technology courses in carpentry and mechanics as well, but his experience in welding convinced him to pursue a journeyperson certification in the industry.

“I like welding more than all the other trades out there,” he says. “It was amazing to get a jumpstart right out of high school. I definitely recommend the dual credit program to anyone looking to get into the trades.”

Larouche agrees, saying, “I would definitely recommend the dual trade option. You get a head start over everyone else and end up being 18, just out of high school and already starting your second year of college. I think it's a great way to give students a jumpstart in their trades career and an option to pursue what they enjoy.”
