The award is based on the performance of student submissions in the 2024-2025 NKBA Student Design Competition, which attracts hundreds of entries from colleges and universities across North America each year. Lakeland was one of only six institutions selected to receive the 2026 award, and it is the 11th year the college has received this award.

“This recognition reflects the consistent effort and creativity our students bring to their work,” says Rochelle Horne, program head for interior design technology at Lakeland. “Our students are encouraged to think critically, solve real-world design problems and develop industry-ready skills throughout the program. To see that work recognized at this level is incredibly meaningful.”

Lakeland’s interior design technology program combines classroom instruction with hands-on learning opportunities that mirror professional practice. Students build practical experience in residential and commercial design, kitchen and bath planning, drafting, materials selection and client presentation while working on projects aligned with industry standards.

The award also highlights the strength of the program’s connection to industry and evolving design trends.

“The design industry is constantly changing, and our faculty work hard to ensure students are learning skills that reflect current expectations and practices,” says Horne. “Awards like this reinforce the value of experiential learning and the importance of empowering students to apply their knowledge in the real world.”

Lakeland has maintained a longstanding relationship with the NKBA and continues to be recognized for the quality of its student work and design education programming.
