An agricultural celebration

There's nothing little about Little Royal.

Little Royal, or Little International as it was known for its first two years, started as a livestock show. It was an opportunity for Vermilion School of Agriculture students to put their skills to work.

By 1929 the show had its new name. It also expanded to include agricultural and home economics display. For the next four decades the show was a highlight activity on the college calendar.

By the early 1970s Little Royal faded away. However, it was revived in 1986. And it was a major revival, as nearly double the expected attendance of 1,500 showed up.

At that time, Little Royal had the feel of a complete open house. It's moved to just being an agricultural sciences event. Open House is held in October.

Today the livestock show remains. One of the student clubs, the Stockman's, has a junior and open steer and heifer show during Little Royal weekend.

Other mainstays of the event include the Western Canadian Judging competition and intercollegiate rodeo.
