Celebrating platoon graduations at ETC
Every firefighter platoon has a special ceremony.
Like all grad ceremonies there are traditions. For example, each firefighter rings a bell and declares themselves ready for service or ready for assignment. If they are already in a fire service, they say ready for assignment. If they don't yet have a place in a service, they say ready for service.
Each platoon also decorates a helmet and hangs that along with a class photo in the main ETC hallway.
The final platoon of 2019 had students from BC to Nova Scotia with a lot of Winnipegers in the group.
Three certificate presentations were made to class members by a family members in emergency services:
- Dwayne Jobson of the Saskatoon Fire Service presented to his son Zane Jobson.
- Andrew Dillion, deputy chief of Superior North Emergency Medical Service (Thunder Bay, Ont.) presented to his son Michael Dillion.
- Shayne Cormier, of the Winnipeg Fire Department presented to his nephew Hayden Reid.
One scholarship was presented along with scholarship nominations to two class members:
- Austin Bridges Memorial Award nominee: Noah Bruinink of Mount Bryden, Ont. Also a second generation alumnus.
- Loralee Nichols Memorial Award nominee: Zane Jobson of Saskatoon, Sask.
- Lakeland College Centennial Firefighter Achievement award recipient: Braden Campbell of Calgary, Alta.
Photos of the ceremony are available to view and download on Flickr image.
