Prepare for a career in interior design and make an impact with Lakeland College.
Your classroom is a design studio.
A computer lab with specialized design software is just for your program. So is a plotter, a sample room and a work room. All are available 24 hours a day.
long your two-year college journey, you’ll develop practical skills such as drafting and rendering.
You’ll also learn:
- design fundamentals
- history
- space planning
- materials
- sustainable building practices
- residential construction
- finishes
You’ll design and create. Then, design and create some more. Put your skills to work in student design competitions from National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and Decorators and Designers Association of Canada (DDA) or projects like designing a space at Lakeland or in the community.
You’ll make industry connections at national design shows and showrooms in Calgary and Toronto. Your 2-month practicum is another chance to use your skills and network.
You’ll graduate with a great portfolio and be ready to work.

Remember that studying includes other expenses than tuition and fees - you should
also be budgeting for your accommodation and living expenses. Alberta student loan
guidelines recommends $1,153/month.

At Lakeland, you'll both learn and practice:
- hand sketching and rendering to graphically represent ideas and designs
- drafting construction documents at your dedicated work station
- selecting and specifying finishes, furniture and materials
- developing detailed plans, elevations and sections
- presenting ideas and solutions
- using software such as AutoCAD, Photoshop, Revit and Sketchup. All these programs are installed in the interior design computer lab.
- spatial planning for residential, retail and hospitality

An interior designer needs many practical applied skills to be successful.

While visiting project sites helps your understanding of construction, you may also visit a site to understand a project.
A variety of pens and adhesives are in your future as an interior design students.

Earn a degree
- Your Lakeland diploma transfers to Yorkville University's Bachelor of Interior Design program. Yorkville University (formerly known as RCC Institute of Technology), has both online and on-campus options.
- Interior Design Technology also transfers to Mount Royal University's Bachelor of Interior Design program. Receive credit for your first year of studies plus 2 second year courses. A minimum of a C+ is required in all identified core courses to qualify for transfer credit.
- Take your Interior Design Technology diploma to NAIT and earn a Bachelor of Technology degree. Graduates must meet the competitive admission and selection requirements of the BTech program at the time of application.

Each component of your learning is designed to familiarize you with the day to day of your future career. Your desk is a drafting table, there's a computer lab with all the software you'll use, along with a sample room.
Our students are fully immersed in the world of interior design.
