Welcome to the Rural Acreage Owner Restricted Pesticide Certification Program (RAORCP).
If you live in a participating municipality, you can be certified to apply pesticides. You'll take a course and learn:
- more about herbicide options
- skills to apply herbicides provided by your municipality
After you're certified, you'll work with your municipality to control noxious weeds on your property.
If you have questions about getting rid of noxious or prohibited noxious weeds, contact your municipality's agricultural fieldman.
Before you call to register for the certificate course, please make sure you have the following information:
- the total size of your acreage, in acres
- approximate number of pasture and non-pasture acres in the acreage
- size of your non-turf weed infested area in the acreage
- confirmation your acreage isn't in a town, village, hamlet or specialized municipality
- confirmation you have been contacted by a weed inspector requesting control of the infested weed area
- your acreage land location (from your tax assessment)
- your credit card number for the $75 course fee
Now, you're ready to register by filling in the registration form for the Rural Acreage Owner Restricted Pesticide Certification program. Or, call Lakeland College's pesticide certification office toll-free at 1 866 853 8646.

Program details
If you are eligible for the Acreage Owner Pesticide program, you will take an online pesticide applicator certificate course. Eligibility requirements are described above.
Your course is through the Lakeland College's pesticide certification office. This is the same office that manages the commercial pesticide applicator certification program.
After you pass the course, you take your certificate to your agricultural fieldman. The fieldman will supply you with an appropriate commercial class pesticides to apply to regulated weeds.
-
Start by going through the required information listed above.
-
Once you have all of your information required in the check list, make your payment online and call Lakeland College's pesticides office to request the Acreage information form. The toll-free number is 877/853-8646.
-
After you register and complete the form, you'll be emailed a link to the course webpage. You'll also receive a username and password to access the online course.
-
The course is broken down into chapters.
-
You must pass each chapter quiz to go on to the next chapter.
-
The pass mark is 70% and you have 3 chances to pass the quiz.
-
If you have difficulty with the chapter quiz, make an appointment with your agricultural fieldman for help. Only after you've met with the fieldman, will you be able to try the quiz again.
-
In the unlikely event you are unable to pass the quiz, and therefore the course, you will need to contact your ag fieldman for other weed control options.
-
After you complete all the chapters, you will be given access to the certification exam. This exam covers the whole course. Pass mark is 70%.
-
Once you've passed the exam, the online system will provide you with a Rural Acreage Owner Pesticide Certificate. Please print the certificate to show to your fieldman for the next part of the weed control project.
-
You may print all the materials, except the quizzes.
-
Keep a hard and electronic copy of the certificate for your records.
-
Take your certificate to your agricultural fieldman. Your fieldman will again confirm you live in a rural area as well as the size of your property and areas in pasture, turf and non-turf.
-
You'll receive additional training about
- specific noxious and prohibited noxious weeds
- managing those weed in pastures and non-turf (grass) areas
-
The fieldman will complete a checklist with you. This will confirm you know how to handle and apply the specific commercial pesticide. As well, that you know any emergency response required with that pesticide.
-
The fieldman will either:
- put sufficient herbicide into your pesticide spray equipment to control the specific weed on your property
- provide the spray equipment with enough herbicide to control the weed outbreak on your property
Notes:
-
Every year that you need more herbicide to control the regulated weeds in your pasture or non-turf areas, you will contact the agricultural fieldman to discuss your options.
-
Every 5 years, you must take the online training to re-certify yourself.
