Alberta does recognize certain certificates from some other provinces. Please see the list of which certificates are recognized in Alberta.
If you hold a recognized out-of-province certificate you may be issued an equivalent
Alberta certificate. This is known as reciprocity. All reciprocity approvals are done
through Lakeland College. Reciprocity is meant for those who previously resided in a different province and
have relocated to Alberta. If you are an Alberta resident, you must write the Alberta
exams. We will not recognize your out-of-province certificate if you earned it while
living in Alberta. Reciprocity can only be obtained once, after which time you will
be required to meet Alberta's recertification requirements or write the full Alberta
Exam.
Before you receive the Alberta certification, based on your home province certification, you must write, at a minimum the Alberta Legislation exam (some exceptions may apply).
How to apply:
- Order the Core Reciprocity Lesson ($40) or full Authorized Assistant (Core Only manual) online.
- Email pesticides@lakelandcollege.ca a copy of your out of province certificate.
- Apply online to write the Reciprocity exam. Someone from the Pesticide department will contact you within 3 business days to select an exam date and proctor location. The 20 question applicator reciprocity exam is based on Alberta provincial legislation
You also need:
- to be employed by an Alberta registered pesticide service
- to work for yourself, apply for a service registration
- register with the Alberta Corporate Registry if your company is a corporation based outside of the boundaries of Alberta.
Further Information:
- your certificate(s) expire on your birthday
- certificates are valid for up to 5 years
- expiry dates will be no later than the original expiry date of the other provinces certificate.
Alberta recognizes:
- only 5-year BC certificates
- only whole class BC certificates
- only certificates that specify aerial (for example, forestry isn't acceptable for an aerial certificate)
We don’t accept the following from BC:
- Agriculture: Apiary, Berry and Vegetable, Livestock and Poultry
- Orchard Forestry: Nursery
- Industrial: Pavers or Noxious Weeds
- Residential Applicator Certificate
