Peer tutors: creating success
No matter what you're studying—agriculture to apprenticeship, firefighting to university transfer—you are eligible for tutoring help.
We've matched students who ask for help with an experienced student or a classmate for years. Tutoring can be one-on-one or part of a larger session for a specific subject, such as math.
Lakeland has partnered with Nimbus Learning, a mobile learning platform. We have two goals to serve you better:
- to make booking, scheduling and communication easier
- to provide support for as many courses as possible.
You are able to sign up as a tutor or to get a tutor.
The Nimbus app is available from both the App Store and Google Play.
Being a tutor has these benefits:
- earn money
- improve your marks
- enhance your resume
Requirements:
- must be currently enrolled or completed the course(s) you want to tutor
- must have or received a minimum B grade
- must be recommended/approved by the course instructor
Steps:
- Email the learner success strategist on your campus for a tutor application form.
- Stacey Haeberle in Vermilion
- Beatriz Bonilla Sand in Lloydminster
- If applying through the Nimbus app, go to Settings and choose Apply to be a tutor.
- After you submit it, your instructor(s) will be notified for their approval.
- Once approved, you'll need to take peer tutor training.
- Be matched with a student on Nimbus.
As a bonus, you'll have opportunities throughout the year to network with other peer tutors and acquire more strategies and skills.
When you sign up for tutoring, here's what you need to know:
- you're eligible for $240 worth of tutoring per semester. This amount will be automatically uploaded into your Nimbus account every semester.
- if you didn't find a tutor in your course search, hit the request more tutors button within the platform.
Group tutorials are often arranged for botany, mapping, chemistry, math and accounting. Sometimes they start at the beginning of the semester. Sometimes the first round of exams exposes a need for group tutoring.
Check on Nimbus and with your instructor to see if there's a group tutorial for a subject you find challenging.
