Emergency Training Centre ETC
At Lakeland College's Emergency Training Centre we teach and practice our motto: Live ready
It’s been our mission since the Alberta Fire Training School (AFTS) began in 1959.
We prepare firefighters and other emergency personnel to respond to emergency events in all sorts of conditions.
We offer hands-on practical training with the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art training grounds in Canada. For that matter, we are one of the best facilities in North America.
Our training meets and exceeds National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
Our instructors are all experienced in fire and emergency services. All have worked in leadership roles.
Besides core firefighting courses, we also do customized programs for municipalities, industrial and business clients .
Train on-site at ETC, or we’ll come to your workplace. We also offer distance learning to individuals.
Pre-professional programs |
Emergency Services Technology (EST) is 10-month full-time core training in firefighting followed by specialization in fire or pre-hospital emergency services. Our program is unique in Canada. Firefighter Training Program (FFT) is 12-week intensive training beyond the NFPA Standard 1001 Firefighter Professional Qualifications. We’ve also added a blended learning platoon, where students do courses online and then come to ETC for the practical training for just 5 weeks. Graduates of both programs are eligible for internationally recognized certification from IFSAC and ProBoard. |
Applied Degree in Business |
You can take higher steps on your career ladder with our applied business degree in emergency services. It's open to professionals with a minimum of 3 years experience (5 years is preferred). You take the degree online over 3 years. It includes two practicums. |
Municipal Training - Distance Learning |
Municipal fire departments often use our distance learning services. This includes client-hosted training, online courses and correspondence courses. Individuals from municipal departments also take courses on-site at ETC to upgrade their qualifications. For more information about distance learning call 780 581 2054 or e-mail dlearnfire@lakelandcollege.ca. |
Professional Training |
Courses balance theoretical and practical, hands-on content. Here, no skill is taught in isolation and all are taught with enough variables for realistic training scenarios. Each new skill builds on what you've learned. Our training environment is about teamwork. It’s the same teamwork that is required in the real world; whether you are in emergency preparedness or response including police, security, emergency medical services, public works and fire services. Our instructors are more than willing to provide extra assistance to ensure you learn the skills you need. Types of training include:

Our History |
A provincial fire training school began in 1959. In 1998, our neighbour Lakeland College welcomed “the fire school” as another faculty. Our name changed from fire etc. to the Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre (ETC). |
