LocationVermilion and Online
CredentialCertificate
Program Length12 or 17 weeks
Delivery MethodFace-to-face
One platoon of this program is available every year via blended delivery. You'll do theory online and come to our training field for the hands-on component. See the firefighter training important dates section for the schedule.

Gear up for an exhilarating career with our nationally recognized firefighter training program.

Our program will put you on the front lines of municipal or industrial firefighting. Our curriculum exceeds the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 requirements. It’s also certified by the Canadian Armed Forces. This means you can use a portion of your education towards a military career.

Your hands-on training takes place at the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art training grounds in Canada. Learn more about the Emergency Training Centre (ETC) and take a virtual ETC tour.

Beyond fighting structure fires, you'll gain extensive hands-on skills in:

  • dangerous goods response
  • vehicle extrication
  • wildland fires
  • industrial fires

Mental health resilience and resume writing are additional courses.

We also offer this in a blended learning format. You do theory online and then spend 5 weeks at ETC for the hands-on.

While you're here, you are also eligible to write the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and/or Pro Board certified exams. This meets the prerequisites you may need for other NFPA professional standards training.

Blended learning gives you the flexibility to take your theory courses online, but still get the hands-on experience at the ETC's training field.

Online learning has advantages, especially if you are "learning while earning" or are simply too far away to commute to training.

Online tips

Time management is a critical part of taking an online course. Because you don't have a scheduled time to be in a classroom, you often must schedule time to work on the course. Here are some helpful hints.

  1. Commit about 4 to 6 hours per week to your program.
  2. Pace yourself--often it's easier to complete an hour a day instead of cramming all the work into a single evening or weekend.
  3. Plan your work--Look over your assignments and create a calendar with deadlines. This road map will help you manage your time and get you to your destination.
  4. Know yourself--If you procrastinate, identify how you waste time and learn strategies to improve your time management.
  5. You can also check out our free online resources including Grammarly and online study skills.

You can continue your learning with specialized professional training at Lakeland College's Emergency Training Centre in:

  • fire officer professional qualifications
  • fire inspector
  • fire investigator
  • fire service instructor
  • industrial brigade member
  • emergency medical response
  • 1140 Wildland
  • 470 Dangerous Good Technician
