This National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) professional standard has 4 levels.

You have a choice of where and how to take each level:

  • all 4 are offered at the ETC as scheduled or corporate training can be arranged
  • the Awareness and Operations levels can be hosted by you at your location

Course ID: FFTS-S900a

Course description: You'll learn to:

  • identify situations where dangerous goods are present through facility and transportation scenarios
  • protect yourself and others
  • control access to the scene when given examples of facility and transportation dangerous goods incidents
  • identify dangerous goods by name, UN/NA identification number, or type placard applied
  • to determine the fire, explosion and health hazard information for each material in a given scenario by using the current edition of the North American Emergency Response Guidebook
  • identify the appropriate initial notifications and how to make them consistent with local emergency response plans or the organization's standard operating procedures.

Course ID: FFTS-S1200

Course description: You will learn to:

  • identify the general shapes of typical dangerous goods containers
  • collect hazard and response information using material safety data sheets (MSDS), CHEMTREC/CANUTED/SETIQ and contacts with the shipper/manufacturer
  • predict the likely behaviour of a material and its container given an incident involving a single dangerous good
  • estimate the potential harm within the endangered area at a dangerous good incident
  • describe the first responders' response objective for each problem when given scenarios involving facility or transportation dangerous goods incidents
  • establish and enforce scene control, including control zones, emergency decontamination and communications
  • initiate the incident management system (IMS) specified in the local emergency response plan and standard operating procedures
  • demonstrate the ability to use personal protective equipment
  • perform defensive control actions set out in the plan
  • evaluate the status of the defensive actions taken to accomplish established response objectives
  • communicate the status of the planned response to the incident commander and other response personnel.

Course ID: 1-DGTC

Course description: This 72-hour textbook-based course uses theory and practical components to prepare anyone who responds to dangerous goods releases or potential releases of dangerous goods. Topics covered include:

  • analyzing the incident
  • collecting and interpreting hazard and response information
  • describing the condition of the container
  • predicting the behaviour of containers
  • planning the response
  • selecting and using Personal Protective Clothing (PPC)
  • developing appropriate decontamination procedures
  • implementing the response

A large part of the course deals with scenarios and hands-on practical application. You'll be expected to use specialized chemical protective clothing and specialized control equipment.

Prerequisite(s): FFTS-S1200 or NFPA 1072 (*formerly 472) Dangerous Goods, Responder – Operations Level.

Course ID: 1-DGCOM

Course description: Students who are responsible for directing and coordinating all activities at a dangerous goods incident, this course is for you. You'll be expected to wear breathing apparatus and specialized chemical protective clothing. You'll learn to:

  • identify types of hazards and response data
  • estimate outcomes
  • plan and implement the response
  • evaluate progress
  • report and document the incident and conduct incident critiques

Prerequisite(s): FFTS-S1200 or experience as an incident commander or attendance at a recognized incident command course such as our previous Firefighting Strategy and Tactics - Command (Theoretical)
