Get accredited steam time through Lakeland College to complete your power engineering certification.
You’ll use our 4th class steam lab at the Lloydminster Cenovus Energy Power Labs. Check out a virtual tour of the Cenovus Energy Power Labs to see where you'll be learning.
The lab is approved by the Alberta Boilers Safety Association as meeting the firing time requirements and practical experience to gain full certification.
Note: It's your responsibility to ensure you meet the requirements of the appropriate provincial safety authority.
This 200-hour course is a combination of hands on training in a lab setting and on-site assignments.
To pass, you must achieve the pass grade and successfully complete the necessary course requirements including the following:
- 200 hours in the Lakeland College steam lab
- Completion of each lab lesson assignments and quizzes as determined by the course instructors
Course requirements/prerequisite:
- You're required to provide proof of completion of a 4th class power engineering Part A or Part B theory course from a recognized and ABSA approved school. Proof must be submitted at the time of registration by emailing energyconed@lakelandcollege.ca.
- If you have completed an earlier edition (i.e. 2.5 edition), confirmation provincial approval to write the Part A exam (i.e. ABSA) is required.
- It's your responsibility to ensure you meet the requirements of the appropriate provincial safety authority.
Course length: 5 weeks
Total hours: 200 hours
Cost: $5,500 plus applicable taxes/fees. (Fees are due in full at the time of registration)
Required supplies: You'll receive detailed information about supplies and requirements before the course starts.
Delivery: onsite at Cenovus Energy Power Labs, Lloydminster campus
Course schedule: Monday to Friday, 7 am to 3 pm

- You'll be required to complete safety requirements and the Lakeland College WHMIS course before this lab course starts.
- There are a limited number of seats.

Note: A minimum number of students is required to run this course. You'll be notified by Lakeland College if a course cancellation is required.

Textbooks:
- 4th Class Power Engineering: Pan Global Edition 3.0 or newer, i.e., 3.5 Edition
Pan Global is stopping its textbooks and learning materials sales. Visit the Lakeland College bookstore for textbooks.
Required supplies:
- Long Sleeve cotton shirt and pants or fire-retardant coveralls. No hoodies.
- CSA Approved hard hat
- CSA Approved Safety Glass with Side Shields
- CSA Approved Steel-toe boots
- Leather work gloves
- Small flashlight
- Small pocket-sized notebook
- Binder, lined paper, graph paper, pen, pencil, ruler
Please note:
- You will receive access to the course content through our online course content platform, D2L.
- Required books are listed by the publisher and approximate costs may be listed for budgeting purposes. For actual costs, please visit the publisher's/supplier’s website.
- You may already have some of these texts and code books from your first year.
- Avoid eBooks. Printed copies are recommended as highlighting and annotations are far easier to make, and the books are easier to reference while taking online quizzes.
Upon successful completion of the 4th Class Power Engineering Steam Lab, you will receive completion documentation including a Lakeland College completion letter.
Note: It is the responsibility of the student to ensure they meet the requirements
of the appropriate provincial safety authority.
Lab attendance is mandatory. Students are required to attend all scheduled power labs.
If a make-up lab is absolutely required, the cost for make-up labs is minimum $200/hour up to $1000/day.
Students can make-up a total maximum of 36 hours. If students miss more than 36 hours, they will fail the course.
Lab make-up time cannot be guaranteed. Lab make-up time must be approved and paid for in advance. *Lab make-up fees are subject to change.
Note: Lab class will be held on the Monday of May long weekend.
100% refund less $500 if refund request is received a minimum of 60 days prior to start date.
100% refund less $2500 if refund request is received 30 – 59 days prior to start date.
No refund if request is received less than 30 days prior to the lab start date.
All withdrawal and refund requests must be made in writing to energyconed@lakelandcollege.ca. A receipt will be sent to you. Note: Not showing up to class does not constitute withdrawal.
Students in the steam lab course will be provided with access to the D2L Desire to
Learn online learning portal. Announcements and reminders are also posted here throughout
the course. Students are encouraged to have access to a computer with an internet
connection.
