Gain the knowledge needed to be a successful gas well and plant operator.
Gas operators are responsible for efficient gas production from the wells they operate to meet company and contract targets.
This 4-part online program takes you through all the theory you’ll need to work as a production operator.
There are 4 courses in the Gas Process Operator Program: QNRG 120 Field and Facility Operations, QNRG 121 Oil and Gas Process Facilities, QNRG 122 Gas Separation & Dehydration, QNRG 123 Facility, Power, Control & Environment.
The Gas Process Operator courses are self-paced, self-directed, fully online and live attendance times are not required. You will have up to 4 months to complete each course.
All 4 courses are offered each month between September and June, allowing you to customize your learning schedule.
Courses begin on the 20th of each month throughout the academic year. Register by the 15th of the month that you wish to begin.
An instructor is also available for support through email if needed.
Complete all 4 courses to earn your certificate.
QNRG 120 GPO Part A - Field and Facility Operations
Field and Facility Operations covers:
- land survey systems
- drilling methods and equipment
- primary, secondary and enhanced hydrocarbon recovery
- artificial lift
- petroleum chemistry
- flow diagrams
- field operations
- direct and indirect fire heaters
- field operations (pigging)
- safety
- isolation of mechanical and electrical equipment
- plant fire protection
- gas well production stream analysis
- hydrocarbon gas sampling methods

QNRG 121 GPO Part B - Oil and Gas Process Facilities
Oil and Gas Process Facilities covers:
- gas compression
- principles of heat exchangers
- hot oil systems
- rotary pumps
- centrifugal pumps
- introduction to valves
- piping materials and connections
- pressure relief valves
- codes and standards
- flare stacks
Course length: 4 months to complete

QNRG 122 GPO Part C - Gas Separation, Dehydration and Sweetening
Gas Separation, Dehydration and Sweetening covers:
- gas plants
- low pressure production facilities
- mass transfer operations
- amine gas sweetening
- sulphur recovery
- sulphur plant operation
- dehydration
- desiccant dehydration
- refrigeration
- introduction to fractionation

QNRG 123 GPO Part D - Facility Power, Control and Environment
Facility Power, Control and Environment covers:
- introduction to electricity

- flow measurement gas
- resume writing
- programmable logic controllers (PLC)
- supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)

There are four courses in the Gas Process Operator program – QNRG120 Field and Facility Operations, QNRG121 Oil and Gas Process Facilities, QNRG122 Gas Separation, Dehydration and Sweetening, QNRG123 Facility Power, Control & Environment.
You will have up to 4 months to complete each course; however, you can work as quickly as you wish to complete the required course content. A one-month course extension option is also available. Please note: A Course Extension Form must be submitted to energyconed@lakelandcollege.ca at least 14 days prior to your course end date. Fees apply.
Yes, a midterm and final exam is required for each course. All exams are online. When you are ready to schedule an exam, you will be required to schedule your exam with an approved proctor in your area and submit an exam request. Detailed information will be available in your online course. Note: Exam fees are the responsibility of the student. Exams must be written in a professional setting.
- Schedule an appointment with an approved exam proctor (refer to the proctor requirements).
- Submit your Exam request form with your preferred date/time. Note: *A separate form is required for each exam and forms must be submitted with a minimum of 5 business days of notice (excludes weekends and holidays).
- A confirmation email with instructions will be sent to you and your exam proctor within 24 hours of your exam date. Note: Exams are flexible and can be scheduled during day, evening or weekend hours. Midterm and final exams can be written during the same or separate exam sitting.

Once you have successfully completed all courses - QNRG120 Field and Facility Operations, QNRG121 Oil and Gas Process Facilities, QNRG122 Gas Separation, Dehydration and Sweetening, QNRG123 Facility Power, Control & Environment, complete the Application for Certificate Form. Your certificate will be mailed out to you from the Office of the Registrar within 4-6 weeks. To request a transcript, submit an email request to transcripts@lakelandcollege.ca.
Note: All course requirements must be completed within your active course dates for successful completion. All courses must be completed within 7 years.
