Delivery MethodFace-to-face

Set a career in the sciences in motion by starting a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree at Lakeland College.

You'll learn - and experiment - in state of the art labs. You’ll be setting yourself up for academic success with smaller class sizes and up-to-date-equipment.

Your labs will also take you outdoors for field labs.

A bachelor of science degree can be a diverse education in more than one science, or in a specific science. This may be the launch of your career in research, consulting or other scientific endeavors.

You have the option to take some or all of the pre-professional requirements in the following areas:

  • dental hygiene
  • dentistry
  • medical lab science
  • nursing
  • nutrition
  • pharmacy
  • veterinary medicine

Through our partnership with Athabasca University (AU), you don't have to transfer to another university to finish a Bachelor of Science. See the "on-campus completion" section below for more inofrmation.

While there are many, many options from where you go from Lakeland to complete a science degree, there are exceptions.

This is because there are some very specific courses for these science-related programs, so you can’t transfer a full year of credits.

These are the programs we recommend you not start at Lakeland, and why they aren’t popular transfer routes from here. For all 3 of these exceptions, you wouldn’t receive credit for a full year of courses and would need 5 years to complete your degree.

  1. Engineering
  2. Kinesiology
  3. Nursing: With the exception of USask, where we have a pre-professional year at Lakeland, most nursing programs are direct entry.

The main universities we transfer to are the University of Alberta, the University of Saskatchewan, MacEwan University and the University of Calgary.

Depending on the major and/or minor you choose, you can stay at Lakeland to a maximum of 60 credits.

The University of Alberta offers a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene.

You must complete one year of pre-professional studies before applying to the program, which can be taken at Lakeland. You will then complete years 2, 3 and 4 at the U of A.

This program has an early application deadline of November 1.

The University of Alberta offers a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science.

You must complete one year of pre-professional studies before applying to the program. However, we recommend that you take the requirements over 2 years because of sequencing and success. You can take that year or years at Lakeland. You will then complete years 2, 3 and 4 at the U of A.

To become a Registered Dietician, students must complete the degree, a professional internship and the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination. See the Dieticians of Canada website for more details.

Students take 30 credits of pre-nutrition and then apply to the four-year program, including the professional experience internship. All 30 credits can be completed at Lakeland.

The University of Alberta offers a BSc in Nutrition and Food Science, Dietetics Specialization.

The University of Saskatchewan offers a BSc in Nutrition.

The U of A offers a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), which requires 60 credits of pre-professional courses. You can complete 30 of 60 credits at Lakeland College. To stay for the full 60 credits, students can take 6 credits of physiology online through the U of A in year two. If students choose to only complete 30 credits, they will transfer to a university general science program to complete the remaining credits.

USask offers a Doctor of Dental Medicine, which requires 90 credits of pre-professional courses. You can complete 60 of 90 credits at Lakeland College. You will transfer to a university general science program to complete the remaining 30 credits.

The U of A offers a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), which requires 60 credits of pre-professional courses. You can complete 30 of 60 credits at Lakeland College. To stay for the full 60 credits, students can take 6 credits of physiology online through the U of A in year two. USask also offers a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), which requires 60 credits of pre-professional courses. You can complete 30 of 60 credits at Lakeland College. You will transfer to a university general science program to complete the remaining 30 credits.

Both universities have strict resident requirements.

The U of C (UCVM) offers a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), which requires 48 credits of pre-professional courses. To keep in line with a BSc back-up, students will likely want to complete 60 credits. All 48-60 credits can be completed at Lakeland.

U Sask's Western College of Veterinary Medicine offers a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), which requires 60 credits of pre-professional courses. All 60 credits can be completed at Lakeland.

Note: Completing university transfer courses doesn't guarantee you admission to degree programs at universities.

You must also meet all the admission requirements of the degree-granting institution. This may include:

  • specific high school courses.
  • competitive admission average - there may be quotas for the number of students admitted to the degree program at the receiving institution.
  • a minimum grade for transfer - some receiving institutions specify a minimum grade for transfer credit.
  • the number of available seats in a program - if you change your program or your receiving institution, be aware that there may not be room in the new program.
  • residency - taking the required percentage of courses at the university (typically 50%).

The major options for the BSc with Athabasca University are:
