Accelerate your 3rd class certification with reduced steam time

4th Class ABSA certification offers direct entry to the 2nd year.

Complete your 3rd Class certification in 8 months through our full-time, on-campus program, process and power engineering.

Begin with a 3-month industry practicum, followed by focused 3rd Class theory. Stay on track with continuous support from dedicated instructors.

Apply early – seats are limited. *Out of province students will need to transfer their license to ABSA.

  1. Valid Alberta Boilers Safety Association 4th Class Power Engineer Certificate of Competency.
    • We may be able to offer conditional admission with documentation that shows:
      • you have successfully completed Part A and Part B and
      • you are currently enrolled in or working towards completing the steam time hours required to obtain your ABSA certificate.

Note:

  • Proof of 4th Class certification must be received by August 1.
  • Out of province applicants who hold a 4th Class certificate will need to transfer their license to Alberta. 
  • Applications will be assessed on a first applied, first qualified basis. 
  • Direct entry to year two of the Process and Power Engineering Program is determined by seat availability.
  • Seat availability is dependent on the number of 1st year students who are eligible to continue to 2nd year.
  • All admission decisions for direct entry into 2nd year will be made starting in May. 

To go directly into second year, you'll need to successfully complete the following course and have valid safety tickets.

  1. Course credit for CO 109 Technical Communications or equivalent. 
    • applicants who are offered admission will need to obtain credit for CO 109 Technical Communications.
    • the course can be completed by enrolling in the course during your first semester of the Process and Power Engineering program. This would mean in addition to the full course load you have with regular labs and lectures. OR by transfer credit if you have completed a communications and computer course equivalent at a recognized Canadian Institution.

  2. Safety tickets are a requirement so you may enter our labs and attend your practicums. All tickets should have an expiry date that is later than your program's end date. If your ticket expires before you complete the program, you'll have to retake the training.

    1. H2S Alive

    • 1 day in-class training course  for anyone working in the petroleum industry that could be exposed to hydrogen sulphide.
    • Online version of training isn't acceptable as it isn't adequate.
    • Estimated cost is $165.
    • Ticket is required by registration day.

    2. WHMIS

    • Must be completed before your first lab.
    • Offered free to students.
    • Link to this online course will be provided closer to program start date. It may also be available online on registration day.

    3. Additional safety tickets may be required for your practicum. That training will be supplied by your practicum host.

The provincial application platform, Apply Alberta, does not have an option to apply directly into year 2 of the process and power engineering program.
