Our state-of-the-art labs prepare you for what you'll find when you go on practicum and join the work force.

Your hands-on experience starts in the Cenovus Power Engineering lab and then moves to the Energy Centre.

Small class sizes, dedicated instructors and industry connections combine to ensure you'll have the skills and experience to stand-out as a power engineer.

Power Engineering Labs

First year steam lab student

  • 100 hours of hands-on learning
  • learn fundamental skills—how to operate and maintain high and low pressure boilers—applicable to any plant
  • discover automated control with touch screen technology

Lab student testing water

  • 200 hours of hands-on learning
  • prepare, plan and execute start-up and shut down of our plant
  • control the plant with the click of a mouse
 

Work-integrated learning - practicums

Work-integrated learning has always been part of Lakeland College's power engineering programs.

You'll work with us to choose an industry placement that suits your career goals and allows you to make industry connections.

First year steam lab student during practicum

  • 240 hours of steam time in 6 weeks
  • offered in December–January
  • ready to write 4th class certification exams at the end of the academic year

Second year power engineering student

  • 480 hours of steam time in 3 months
  • offered May–August between your first and second year
  • complete your 3rd class certification in 2 years giving you a head start in the job market
